Step 1

First, apply for an electronic visa or E-visa on http://www.getvisa.com/english/. That website guides you step by step on how to fill out the application form. If you're going to Indonesia, just click "Korea Visa" then choose "Electronic Travel Registration" which allows you to go directly online and buy an E-Visa.

Step 2

When your E-visa is approved and ready for printing, you must print it out. Then, go to an embassy or consulate office (the address is on the printout) in your country with all necessary documents shown below: -

  • Your passport with valid for at least 6 months left
  • Completed application form printed from the website
  • One recent color photo that fits with a 3x4 inch size paper * If you still have previous visa stamps on your passport page when you apply for a new one, take them off before photos are taken. You don't need to show those old visas anymore because they're no longer valid after getting a South Korean Visa.
  • Your round trip flight itinerary or E-ticket (Most airlines provide an electronic ticket, but if you bought a paper ticket too, take it)
  • An official letter from your current employer if working or proof of income If you're planning to work while in South Korea, the company must write and submit that letter for you. Make sure the letter is on the company's letterhead and contains the information below:
  • Applicant's full name - Current address (current residence address in Korea) - Reason why they want to stay long term (type of job contract/employment agreement; details about future job position)
  • Complete phone number & email ** The embassy will contact the employer directly and ask them some questions regarding your employment status.


Step 3

Get ready for your visa interview. Some embassies provide online appointments, but if not, you have to go there in person and make an appointment first. The process of visa interviews may take a week or two. You will be able to find the result online after that. If your E-visa is approved, you can now book your flight ticket to Korea!

Step 4

Now it's time for departure! Make sure you bring all the luggage as checked in because they won't allow you to bring extra luggage with hand-carry luggage. You also must pass through the security check at the airport just like any other international flight.

When the plane flies over South Korea, open up your window and take pictures (your face too) of some nice places below; I bet this is the best thing that you can do on your first flight to South Korea!

Step 5

Finally, you arrive at Incheon International Airport. There are a lot of people waiting there but they won't let you go out until the immigration checkpoint is finished. It may take about 30 minutes or more, so just be patient.

After that, you will get an arrival stamp in your passport and then walk out through the exit gate where the Gangnam Style PSY guy was dancing for us when he met us at the end of his music video clip "Gangnam Style".

Enjoy walking around those famous places while keeping your eyes looking down on the ground because some small pieces of paper with numbers and letters are scattered around everywhere (you need to find them).

These papers are called "fANcY Passport" which you need to match with your passport codes and numbers. Then, go to the taxi outside of the airport and go to your place.

Facts About South Korea

I'd like to share some interesting facts about South Korea that you didn't know before visiting this country.

  1. A perfect place for shopping 

If you're a big fan of shopping, yes…you guessed it right! South Korea is the best place for you to go because there are many things available at affordable prices. You will find several malls in almost every corner of Seoul and other cities nationwide.

Some popular brands inside these malls also provide outlet stores where they sell their products (usually previous models) at a lower price than the regular market price.

Also, traditional markets with thousand years-old histories still exist all over the country: Namdaemun Market in Jung-gu; Dongdaemun Market in Jongno; and Noryangjin Fish Market in Noryangjin are some of them. 

  1. Korean food is delicious!

It's not wrong to say that Korean food is the best among Asian countries, and thus one thing you shouldn't miss while visiting South Korea. The variety of food available here is mind-boggling; from barbecue meat to spicy Kimchi (the national dish), from soups to seafood dishes...you name it! Among them, I have to mention about 2 must-try dishes:

  • Hotteok - Kind of doughnuts with sweet filling inside and covered with powdered sugar. It doesn't seem interesting at first glance, but this could be the most addicting snack ever! You can buy one for KRW 1,000 or eat in the streets.
  • Tteokbokki - It's a kind of spicy rice cake. You can buy it in grocery stores and convenience stores for KRW 3,000-4,000 (roundabout USD3).


  1. Korea is an advanced country in terms of technology 

South Korea has always been one of the top countries when talking about IT because almost all people here know how to use computers and smartphones. Smartphones are so popular that they outnumber private cars! Talk about advancement!

Also, you can see some latest technologies like robots everywhere around the country. They have even introduced robot security guards who keep watch over public buildings. To be honest with you guys, I've never seen any other country with such great advancement in technology. It's like a glimpse of the future!

  1. All-South Koreans are really kind and helpful 

That's what I've experienced during my 3 weeks stay here; people are always ready to help you if you're struggling/in trouble while walking on the road or inside a subway station.

They say " 천만에 대하고 예의가 있다 ", which means " be polite towards others ". This is true even for security guards, taxi drivers, postmen, etc. You'll experience this kindness from the first day that you arrive at Incheon International Airport, where there will be officials guiding you through immigration to finding your transportation.

  1. South Korea has the highest average salary compared to other Asian countries

According to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), South Korea has the highest average salary among all Asian countries (including Japan) in 2010.

On the other hand, North Korea is at the bottom of 11th place with only 2% of South Korean's salary (USD 873 compared to USD 33,462). What a great difference isn't it?

  1. Soccer is the most popular sport here

You can see this kind of craze especially during World Cup or other international soccer tournaments, some South Koreans even go far as to say that this sport is the number 1 religion here! I mean, you can find/hear people talking about soccer while eating, drinking and shopping (even on a date).

As for me, I'm not interested in any sports but if you're into them like football/basketball/volleyball,...I would recommend you to check out LG Cheetahs, where one of the Korean professional volleyball teams plays their home matches mostly on weekends.   1. "Dokdo" and "Turtle Island" are in Korean territory

We all know that Japan, China and Korea have been fighting over Dokdo (known as Takeshima in Japan), an island located to the east of South Korea's coast. If you've watched the news recently, I'm sure that you'll have heard about this issue (even from some famous celebrities).

Even though it's now all gone because of a treaty signed by 5 countries including China and Russia; they still try to claim Dokdo as their own land. This is why "Dokdo never restarts ~ 차여만에는 독도를 잊은 적이 없다 " which means it will never be forgotten.

Anyway, the South Korean government is also doing their best to protect its territory...even by pulling out American soldiers from the area (which they didn't like). I'm not too sure about the background story, but you can read more about this here.

To make things short, South Korea now has 2 police officers stationed on Earth's most eastern island called "Turtle Island" in English and Ulleung-do in the Korean language. At first, everyone was worried that if North Korea attacks, then there won't be enough security for those policemen.

The good news is that this island is too far from North Korea to reach it, and there have not been any conflicts (until now) in the surrounding area for many years.
